“TETELESTAI”... The phrase that forever changed the course of history. This word of Greek origin translates to what we know as “It Is Finished.”
In the age of the New Testament, “Tetelestai” was something that could be found on receipts or documents signifying that a bill had been paid in full. It was also something that a person would say to others to let them know that their work had been completed.
In Jesus’ final moment, “Tetelestai” was what He said before He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. What is the significance of this you ask? Well, I’d have to say everything. With this statement, Jesus’ work on this earth was finished. He came and served faithfully for 33 years, not once sinning. His perfection made Him the perfect sacrifice and through His work on the cross, our sin debt has been paid in full.
The moment that “Tetelestai” was uttered, the world was never the same.
